OSPAAAL, the Organisation in Solidarity with the People of Africa, Asia and Latin America, is the main publisher of international solidarity posters in Cuba. Based in Havana, their primary means of distributing posters was through their magazine 'Tricontinental', which included a folded poster in nearly every issue. Distributed throughout the world, these posters have messages printed in English, French, Spanish and Arabic. The Organisation espoused the belief that none are truly free until all are free, thus they identified with people suffering injustice throughout the world.
In this poster, the Cuban designer Lazaro Abreu demonstrates a type of visual solidarity with the Black Panthers by appropriating an image made by Emory Douglas, the Party's official artist and the Black Panther Minister of Culture.
