This relief representing a Cherub head was made in the early 19th century Palestine. This was probably the handle of a Baptismal spoon.

Carved mother of pearl relief of a Cherub head, probably part of a baptismal spoon, Palestine, 19th century
Physical description
Carved mother of pearl relief of a Cherub head, probably the handle piece of a baptismal spoon. The head of the Cherub looks left with the wings extended towards the ends of a pointed oval. An inscription on the lower part of the surrounding border reads 'GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO'. At the top is a pierced drop shaped projection on a small base. The relief is thick and convex, at the back a ridge of shell is left below the projection.
