Formerly the property of the British Theatre Association (B.T.A.), this bronze bust of the drama critic William Archer (1856-1926) was acquired in 1990 along with the B.T.A.'s famous theatre library.

William Archer was an ardent campaigner for the establishment of a National Theatre. He championed the realistic and serious 'New Drama', particularly the work of Henrik Ibsen whose plays he translating into English.

This sculpture came to the Theatre Museum from the British Theatre Association (formerly The Drama League) when it was disbanded and the museum acquired a copy of all of their sets of texts.
