Marks and inscriptions
'P.T.O. The drawing has been [illegible],/ Do not wipe out these lights on/ the face or collar, which have ruined my modelling.' 'The place must be untouched!' 'Pink and yellow too dark/ Advise lettering in block as the [illegible] is/ a bad harmony with the other collors' 'I feel the attraction of the Programme shan't depend/ on the drawing, if it stands the/ lettering, kills it. [Illigible] the lettering/ be not so close to the drawing.' (Hand-written around the print and on the back of it.)

Object history
This drawing was bequeathed by Beverley Nichols to Vivian Ellis and his sister Hermione Ellis. A copy, obviouisly an extract from his will, was glued to the backboard of the original frame reading: 'To Vivian Ellis and Miss Hermione Ellis, my portrait of Pavlova by Laura Knight and to the survivor of them on the death on one.' The backboard was also inscribed in 'biro: 'FROM BEVERLEY NICHOLS' and 'ANNA PAVLOVA BY LAURA KNIGHT'
