The long perspective in this photograph shows the main gateway to the Taj Mahal as seen from inside the Taj enclosure.
The photographer was Felice Beato (born about 1830; died after 1904). He travelled through India after the so-called ‘Mutiny' or uprising of the Indian army in 1857 and took photographs of the sites associated with it. He also took more general photographs of the most important monuments of the cities he visited. This is one of them.

Physical description | This photograph shows the main gateway of the Taj Mahal. This is a view of it as seen from inside the Taj encloser. A marble canal with fountain heads runs from the gateway to the Taj and on either side of the canal are trees and bushes. There are several people in the mid-ground which give a sense of scale to the building. |

The markings on the mount are an indication of the history of the object, its movement through the museum and the way it is categorised. The mount is green, it has a label with the title on it on the right hand side. |
