The comic actor John Lawrence Toole (1830-1906) is shown in this caricature by Frederick Waddy (1848-1901) reproduced in the periodical Once a Week, 9th March 1872, with the busybody character's catch-phrase: 'I hope I don't intrude'. He is standing in front of a poster of the Gaiety Theatre where he was engaged for many productions from 1868 until 1877.

Toole first made a success as Paul Pry in John Poole's comedy Paul Pry in 1857, and frequently played it throughout his career.
