Miss Joan Drummond, age 4-5 year old, is photographed wearing this dress as she poses in a chair, Museum No. B.1-2013, ca.1901. The dress is made of a white, plain weave cotton with a decorative white work trim which features a star and zigzag motif at the neck, sleeves and the hem. It is unlined, short sleeved and mid-length. Joan was one of 10 children born to John and Andrina Angus. Tragically she did not reach adulthood, dying of peritonitis aged 12 year old.

Physical description
Short sleeved, mid-length unlined dress. White, plain weave cotton with a cotton whitework trim featuring a star and zigzag motif at the neck, sleeves and the hem. The dress has a crew neck with ‘V’ shaped, bib collar which is fastened at the back by a draw string. The short sleeves have two layers of the decorative star and zigzag flouncing. The dress has a mid-length bodice with a plain band of cotton at the waist. The pleated full skirt is stitched to this band. The skirt features two panels of double-helix and star and zigzag whitework and two founces. The dress is fastened at the back with incised mother of pearl buttons.

Miss Joan Drummond, age 4-5 year old, is photographed wearing this dress as she poses in a chair, Museum No. B.1-2013. The chair was designed by Ambrose Heal for her, and its central panel features a child in prayer, which closely resembles Joan. Joan’s older sister, Christine Sickert (nee Drummond) was a friend and designer for Ambrose Heal and she was married to the artist, Walter Sickert. Joan died age 12 year old. Christine Sickert also designed the following items: Embroidered silk: T.107-2012, a cot cover: T.83-1953 and a dalmatic at Westminster Abbey.
