Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Ivan Sotnikov was a founding member of the New Artists, one of the non-conformist groups of the early 1980s, later evolving into the New Academicians. Visually and thematically, his work has most affinity with the folkloric motifs and satirical mood of the Mitki group, with whom he also exhibited. Fireworks shows Lenin’s mausoleum in silhouette overlapping the Tsarskaya Tower behind. It is framed by the ancient Russian symbol of the fir tree but also irreverently co-opted as a stage for exuberant pyrotechnics.

Although involved with other groups, Ivan Sotnikov shared the folk style and satirical outlook of the Mitki. Here Communist Russia’s most sacred site, Lenin’s Mausoleum, seen in silhouette overlapping the Tsarskaya Tower behind, is put to irreverent use as the stage for an exuberant fireworks display.
