Shaun Leane trained as a jeweller in London's Hatton Garden and worked for the English Traditional Jewellery company, learning traditional goldsmithing skills, making new jewellery and restoring older pieces . In 1993, he began to collaborate with the fashion designer Alexander McQueen to make show stopping catwalk pieces such as those made for the 1995 'Highland Rape' collection. In 1999, he set up his own company and began trading as 'Shaun Leane Jewellery'. He has produced collections for Harvey Nichols and worked with Boucheron, De Beers, Bacardi and won 'Jewellery Designer of the Year' four times.
Shaun Leane has had a relationship with the V&A since the 2001 'Fashion in Motion' event in which his work was shown alongside Alexander McQueen. In an interview with 'Goldsmith and Jewellery Designer' magazine, he recalled that 'As a young teenager, I used to walk around the V&A as if it was my second home and still do; and now my work is there which is quite amazing!'. Shaun Leane was filmed making this ring for the V&A gallery to illustrate the stages in the manufacture of a diamond ring. He created the 'vine' ring, an elegant design which he describes as 'fashioned to perfection to represent the eternity of love and the unerring individuality of human commitment'.
