Pickersgill exhibited portraits at the Royal Academy for more than sixty years from 1806, and fulfilled many other portrait commissions. A few of these were of oriental subjects, or of Europeans with oriental connections, such as the explorer, James Silk Buckingham. In this fine pencil drawing, the bearded oriental sitter is sensitively characterised in three different poses. Neither his origin nor his identity are known.
