This cemetery was the last resting place of the British soldiers who died in the nearby Selimiye Barracks during the Crimean War; several of Florence Nightingale's nurses are also buried here. Across the water is the European shore with the city of Constantinople on its seven hills and the entrance to the Golden Horn. Aya Sofya, the Tower of the Vezirs and Seraglio Point are clearly visible.
