This brooch, in the shape of a Greek pediment, looks to the architecture of the ancient world for inspiration. The women depicted under the pediment may be intended to represent The Three Graces who were the daughters of the Greek God Zeus and companions to the Muses. They were associated with attributes such as mirth, elegance, youth and beauty.

Louis Wièse, who made this piece, and his father Jules ran an outstanding firm of jewellers in Paris. They specialised in works inspired by archaeological finds, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
