    The figures that make up Christie Brown's 'Cast of Characters', including this head, represent different aspects of humanity. She associates heads with the senses, the emotions and communication. Brown is also interested in the importance of ceramics in archaeology; like much of her work, this piece resembles a fragment of an ancient sculpture.

    The head is from Christie Brown's series of work The Cast of Characters.

    Christie Brown has stated that the "A" in the title is not significant, and may be better dropped, although it may have been on the original list works supplied to Adran Sassoon. See email attached to acquisition papers 96/855
