This is a plaster model made by Thomas Earle in England in about 1865. This model was for the marble statue of Miranda from Shakespeare's The Tempest, 'What is 't, a spirit?' exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1866.
Thomas Earle (1810-1876), the son of the sculptor John Earle (1779-1863) initially trained at the workshop of Sir Francis Chantrey, later attending the Royal Academy Schools in 1832. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1834 and 1873, and at the British Institution between 1843 and 1865.

Object history | Given by Mrs Earle - presumed to be the sculptor's widow - in 1876, together with V&A-Mus-no: 383-1876. These two pieces may have been lent to the Museum by the sculptor prior to their acquisition. What were described as two 'plaster casts' are recorded as being lent to the Museum prior to 1870 by a 'T. Earle, Esq.' |
