The obverse side of this silver medal depicts Minerva and Mercury with the legend 'Arts and Commerce promoted'. On the reverse side within a laurel wreath is inscribed 'For an original drawing' and around the legend is the inscription 'To Lieut. Robt. Smith. MDCCCXVI [1816] Socy. Insd London 1753'. It is signed by 'Pidgeon E.'
The Society of Arts awarded prizes, known as premium awards, in the form of medals and financial rewards to innovators in the liberal arts and sciences. They were given for new inventions, as well as in recognition of design and artistic merit.
