Around 1580 a new type of blue-and-white porcelain was developed at Jingdezhen in China. Originally intended for export around Asia it was soon traded across the world, including the Americas. This commerce was driven primarily by the Dutch East India Company (founded 1602), which shipped the new wares in unprecedented quantities.

Physical description
Porcelain jar of potiche form with narrow neck. Painted in cobalt blue under a transparent crackled glaze with deer amongst formal foliage; on the shoulder with overlapping petals.

The jar was made for export to south-east Asia.

Stated to have been bought by the donor at a London auction, where they were being sold by a Chinese who had acquired them in Celebes.
