This type of ring, with a large central stone enclosed at each side by three smaller stones in closed settings, is called ‘a fiocco’ in Italy because of its resemblance to a bow. It is very typical of Italian traditional rings, particularly those worn in the area around Rome.

It was bought as part of the Castellani collection of Italian Peasant Jewellery at the International Exhibition, Paris, 1867.
