Sven Palmqvist (1906-84) joined Orrefors Glassworks in the 1920s and graduated through studies under Simon Gate, Edward Hald and various art schools in France and Stockholm. He created several new glass techniques, including the mosaic-like 'Ravenna' technique (given this name following a visit by Palmqvist to that city). The Ravenna series was launched by Orrefors Glassworks in 1948. Like many Orrefors artists, Palmqvist designed with equal skill both for ornamental wares and for major public and government commissions.
