Panel
1510-1520 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This wonderful plaque is one the most exquisite example of Renaissance maiolica painting.
Although the mark TB has not been identified convincingly with any maiolica painter, the style in which the panel is painted recalls artists such as Andrea Mantegna and Girolamo Genga, as well as Albrecht Dürer.
The small scale of the object suggests that it might have been used for private devotion; a companion plaque, also marked with the initials TB or BT, in the Bargello Museum in Florence, depicts the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. Both plaques could have been displayed alongside each other in a scholar's study.
